On the road to Hamilton

After packing up from our last night in the camper and a delicious breakfast cooked in our last communal kitchen we were on the way to Hamilton. Our first stop off in the morning was at Rainbow Springs, a small animal park that has an amazing kiwi rehabilitation centre. We were able to go ‘backstage’ at the park to see the incubators where they keep the eggs nice and warm until they are ready to hatch. We were extra lucky as the day before we arrived the centre saw the birth of their 1000th chick! He was very cute lying in his incubator. As an official sign that spring had sprung the park was full of cute little ducklings!

Go All Blacks!

humungous trout!

Cute, fearless little duckies.
Matt's new favourite animal the Kea.

Our second stop was in a small town called Tirau, which has a passion for corrugated iron. Passion might be a bit of an understatement for their high street, from the information centre that was actually inside a corrugated iron dog to the 40ft Jesus that stood at the front of the church. It was an interesting stop off to say the least.

Our next stop was Cambridge, a quaint English looking town and a great place to stop for a cup of tea and a piece of cake, I know, we are such party animals!

Then we had reached our destination, Hamilton. There was a lot of cool independent shops and coffee shops. Hamilton is also proud to be the birthplace of Rocky Horror Picture Show writer Richard O’ Brien. The fact is celebrated with a statue of him dressed up as Riff Raff.
