Grand Canyon

Internet access in Las Vegas is more expensive than Gold, so we have a few days to catch up on.
After Williams our next stop was the Grand Canyon. I will admit, I didn’t really know much about the canyon other than it was a big hole and the film The River Wild was filmed there. Well it turns out that the Grand Canyon is more than just a ‘big hole’, it is a super massive hole!

It took a while for it to sink in just what we were looking at but as we walked up and down the rim it started to become clearer, about a mile down you could just about make out the trees and bushes growing . Due to the grand scale of things our photos don’t really do it justice, but here is a taster…

Matt couldn't wait to get down into the canyon.

Shade!!

Sunrise over the canyon.
Happy to have finished our trek.

We were lucky enough to spend a mind-blowingly-awesome night on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. During the evening several amazing events happened.

Amazing event number 1: Matt took me to a restaurant!
Yes, an actual restaurant, which was very sophisticated for us, we had 3 waiters looking after us which was a little bizarre, the food was amazing especially the cactus cocktails! But the best part was watching the sun set over the Canyon.

Amazing event number 2:
We saw stars! Actually we saw billions of stars, the milky way and a shooting star. We went along to one of the parks evening talks in the open air amphitheatre, it was a bit of an adventure finding the place with our weedy touch but when we made it, it was well worth the trek. The nights events can be summed up easily by saying; 200 hippies sitting in a pitch black clearing in the forest, talking about mass extinctions, listening to Jodi Mitchel and watching the stars. Not as depressing as it sounds because the talk focused on some of the preservation success stories such as the re-introduction of the California Condor into the wild, good times!

Amazing event number 3:
The sheer number of amazing animals we encountered. A few of the highlights are as follows:

There were squirrels all around the park, they had obviously learnt that the cuter they are the more food tourists would give them. DO NOT TRUST THIS SQUIRREL!

Can you spot the Blue Jay?

California Condors- having a rest.

And now flying. The Condor has a wingspan of about 3 meters!

This stag creeped up on us in the night.

I will sign off with this van that was parked in the car park as we left to continue our journey to Las Vegas…
